Antique Clock Repairs

Home      Wheel and Pinion Cutting

Free assessment, estimate and collection are all done in one visit with no call out fee for the majority of clocks.  If a clock can be adjusted / set up and given a drop of oil to get it going, this can be done for a small fee but with no guarantee as no repair will have been carried out.  Clocks requiring further attention will be taken to the workshop for repair / restoration as agreed.  All work is carried out by Graham Harding a trained and experienced clockmaker who, as can be seen in this web site, not only carries out repair and restoration work for private customers but makes replacement parts for other clockmakers nationwide.  Graham is a professional member of the Watch and Clockmakers Guild abiding with the rules, objects and code of conduct as specified.  Although some minor work will only have a short guarantee the majority of work carries a 12 month guarantee on workmanship with purchased parts being guaranteed as per the manufacturer.  No work will be carried out until an estimate has been agreed.  Having low overheads and no staff, prices charged are set below the national average and are NOT subject to V.A.T.

DUE TO AN INCREASING DEMAND FOR ANTIQUE CLOCK REPAIRS MODERN CLOCKS ARE NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED

Spare Parts

Many of the parts required for antique clocks have to be made by the clockmaker.  The above picture shows a Vienna crutch pin being turned, the diameter is being checked and should in this case be 2.3mm.  There will be a shoulder of 5mm which will have an 8BA threaded hole through it. For the next stage the lathe chuck will be removed and a precision collet will be used to hold the piece. Many other parts are more involved and would take many photographs with a lengthy description.  Much of the workshop tooling is specialised, this is also made by Graham in the workshop.

On the bench

This is where it all starts.  The above movement is an English fusee type from a wall dial clock. This one has been stripped and checked for wear, the drive chain has been load tested. The next stage is for the pallets, pivots & bearings to be burnished followed by a thorough clean and polish prior to reassembly and oiling.  This movement requires no major repairs, a quality English movement from around 1850, they don't make them like that anymore!
